Custom Embroidery Patches for Ohio Schools, Teams and Shops
Ohio patch orders cluster around two things: school sports and the workshop floor. Varsity letters and booster merch on one side, company badges on work shirts and jackets on the other. The two need different builds, and most of the mistakes come from treating them the same way.
How we work: we produce patches online and ship them to customers across Ohio. We don't have a shop in the state. Files come back by email and finished patches arrive by tracked shipping.
Friday nights and letter jackets
Football is a big deal across Ohio, from high school fields up to the college game, and letter jackets still matter to a lot of families. That drives steady demand for chenille.
A proper varsity letter isn't just chenille. The plush yarn fills the big shape, and embroidery handles the outline, the year and any small text, because chenille yarn is too thick to hold anything under about half an inch. If a quote shows a chenille letter with a tiny sport icon in the middle and no embroidery, ask how they plan to make that icon readable.
Sizing is simple once you know the ranges. Chest letters usually run 4 to 8 inches tall, back pieces 8 to 12. Height matters more than width for letters. Below about 3 inches the chenille texture stops reading, so small awards and pins are better as embroidered patches. More detail on construction is in our chenille patches guide.
The consistency problem
Here's the one that catches schools out. A letter earned this year has to look like the one a sophomore earns in two years, and like the one their older sibling already has hanging in a closet. School colors look simple, but "scarlet" or "orange" can land on several different threads depending on who picks them.
The fix costs nothing: get the thread numbers written down on the first order and quote them every time. We keep your file and the references on record, so a reorder two seasons later matches.
Band, boosters and everything else
Marching band, show choir, drill team and booster clubs order smaller runs with more detail: crests, mascots, event names, dates. That's where embroidery's text limit bites. Embroidered text needs to be about 5mm tall to stay readable. If your band crest has a motto ribbon in tiny type, woven is the honest recommendation, since it holds text down to roughly 2mm and a ten-color design costs about the same as a three-color one.
Small groups sometimes assume they can't order at all. Minimums are kept low, so a club of fifteen doesn't need a 200-piece order. Our school patches page covers letters, club badges and award patches in more detail.
Manufacturing and trades workwear
Ohio has a long manufacturing and trades base, and those crews wear their branding hard. Patches on work shirts, coveralls and jackets go through heavy industrial laundering and daily abrasion.
What works:
- Sew-on backing. Iron-on adhesive breaks down under repeated hot washing. On a shop uniform it'll lift inside a season.
- Polyester thread. It holds color through bleach and heat better than rayon.
- Bold, simple artwork. A fine-lined crest doesn't get better after a year near grinders and grease. If the logo has detail, simplify the patch version.
- Velcro for names. If staff turn over, a velcro name tape on a permanently badged shirt means the shirt can be reissued.
If your crews wear flame-resistant clothing, tell us before quoting. Standard polyester patches don't belong on FR garments, and the garment maker's rules decide what can be added. For uniform programs more broadly, see custom embroidery for uniforms.
Winter gear
Ohio winters mean insulated jackets and canvas coats, and heavy outerwear rules out iron-on. The fabric doesn't bond reliably and the heat can damage synthetic shells. Sew-on embroidered patches are the dependable choice. PVC stiffens in deep cold and can crack where a jacket flexes, so it's a weaker pick for winter workwear than it is for summer outdoor gear.
A timeline that actually works
Digitizing, where your logo becomes a stitch file, comes back in 12–24 hours. After you approve the free proof, patch production and shipping typically take a couple of weeks. Larger runs take longer.
For schools, the practical advice is to order in summer. Everyone wants letters and team patches in August and September, and an early-summer order for the fall season beats a rushed one every time. For awards night, count back from the date, not forward from when someone remembers.
Picking a patch type
- Letter jackets: chenille with embroidered outline and year
- Club, band and award patches: embroidered, or woven if the text is small
- Work shirts and coveralls: embroidered, sew-on, polyester thread
- Staff names: velcro
- Caps: embroidered or leather, depending on the logo
Every type is covered on our custom patches page.
If you've got artwork and a date in mind, send both over and we'll quote it with a free proof.
