Underlay and Pull Compensation Explained
These are the two things that separate embroidery that lies flat and crisp from embroidery that wrinkles and drifts — and you never actually see either of them in the finished piece. Underlay is the hidden layer of stitches beneath your design. Pull compensation is the deliberate oversizing that cancels out how thread distorts fabric. Skip them and you get puckering and misaligned outlines, no matter how nice your machine is.
Underlay: the foundation nobody sees
Before the visible "top" stitches go down, the digitizer lays underlay — light stitches that do three quiet jobs:
- Hold the fabric steady so it can't shift under the needle.
- Give the top stitches a base so they don't sink into soft or fuzzy fabric like fleece, terry, or knit.
- Define clean edges for satins and fills.
Different fabrics need different underlay — a cap needs more than a woven patch, fleece needs more than twill. Auto-converters rarely get this right, which is a big reason auto-digitized files pucker.
Pull compensation: sewing bigger to finish right
As the machine sews, thread tension pulls the fabric inward along the stitch direction. Leave that uncorrected and satin columns come out too skinny and outlines don't sit on top of their fills anymore — that's misregistration. Pull compensation extends the shapes a touch in the pull direction, so once the fabric settles, everything lands at the intended size and lines up.
Think of it like a carpenter cutting a hair long, knowing the fit will pull it back to exact. The digitizer sews slightly large on purpose.
The other things that cause puckers
Digitizing does the heavy lifting, but it's not the only lever. Also check your stabilizer (match it to the fabric weight), your hooping (snug and square, never stretched), and your density (too many stitches in one spot overwhelms the fabric).
