PES Files: Converting Logos for Brother and Babylock Machines
If you run a Brother or Babylock machine, PES is your native format. It behaves differently from the industrial DST standard in a couple of ways that matter, and there's one compatibility trap that catches people out regularly.
What PES holds
Like every embroidery format, a PES file is fundamentally a list of stitch coordinates and machine commands. The difference from DST is that PES also stores thread colour information.
With a DST, the machine knows only "stop here and change colour" — which colour is up to whoever is running it. With a PES, the file carries the intended palette, so the machine displays the colour sequence and can show a preview of the finished design.
For a home or small-shop user that's genuinely useful: you load the design and it tells you what to thread and when.
The version trap
This is the single most common PES problem, and it isn't a fault in your file.
PES has gone through multiple versions — v1 through v10 and beyond — as Brother added features. **Older machines cannot read files saved in newer versions.** A perfectly good PES saved as v6 will simply refuse to load on a machine expecting v1.
Symptoms: the machine reports an unreadable or invalid file, or shows nothing at all when the USB is inserted.
The fix is straightforward once you know: ask for a lower PES version. v1 is the most universally compatible and works on essentially everything. You lose some metadata; the stitching is identical.
So when you order, it's worth saying which machine you run. "PES for a Brother PE800" is a more useful brief than "PES".
PES and hoop size
Home Brother machines have small hoops — often 4×4 inches, sometimes 5×7 or 6×10 on larger models. This constrains design size far more than industrial equipment does.
A design digitized for a 3.5 inch commercial left-chest logo fits fine. A 6 inch design will not fit a 4×4 hoop, and the machine will refuse it. Tell your digitizer your hoop size and the file will be built inside it.
Density on domestic machines
Worth being honest about: home machines run slower, have less powerful motors and use lighter needles than industrial heads. A file digitized aggressively for a commercial Tajima can cause thread breaks and skipped stitches on a domestic Brother.
A file made for domestic use should be slightly less dense with cleaner sequencing. It's the same design, tuned differently — another reason "which machine?" is not an idle question. Related: digitizing mistakes that ruin a sew-out.
Converting between PES and DST
Format conversion between finished stitch files is straightforward — the stitch data transfers cleanly. Two caveats:
DST to PES loses nothing but gains nothing. A DST has no colour data, so a PES converted from one will have placeholder colours you'll need to set yourself.
Neither conversion improves a bad file. If the underlying digitizing is over-dense or badly sequenced, converting formats carries the problems across untouched. Conversion is not repair.
